Enhancing first response safety: BOMBA Malaysia’s experience with Gasmet analyzers in emergency response operations

BOMBA Malaysia’s HAZMAT teams rely on real-time hazardous gas analysis to protect lives, property, and the environment during emergency response operations.

Managing chemical risks in emergency response situations

The Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia (BOMBA) is responsible for emergency response across 13 states, including firefighting, technical rescue, fire safety education, emergency medical services, and disaster management. In large-scale incidents, responders are exposed to chemical hazards and toxic industrial compounds, making accurate and immediate gas identification essential for safety.

FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared) analyzers are used in Hazmat operations to identify and quantify gases in real time during chemical incidents. This allows responders to assess the type and concentration of hazardous gases on site, supporting risk mitigation and public safety decisions. For example, these cases illustrate the operational role of FTIR analyzers in supporting evidence-based decisions during hazardous material incidents:

emergency response gas analysis at hazmat incident

  • During the styrene gas leak in Pasir Gudang, Johor, the integration of FTIR gas analyzers, and long-range stand-off detectors (FTIR-IR) provided reliable and useful information that helped convince the public about the necessity of protective actions
  • In a separate incident involving a truck accident and the spillage of aluminum dross, FTIR analyzers were used to detect and monitor hazardous substances, enabling safe management of the spill.

Deploying FTIR technology for reliable results

Since 2010, BOMBA has used Gasmet portable gas analyzers with FTIR technology. In 2021, they upgraded to GT5000 Terra multi-gas analyzer that is deployed in almost every gas-related incident, providing real-time hazardous gas identification. The GT5000 Terra delivers simultaneous multi-gas measurement and on-site analysis, supporting risk assessment and confident decision-making in HAZMAT operations.

Why BOMBA Experts trust Gasmet analyzers for HAZMAT safety

  • Enhanced Safety: Quick identification of hazardous gases reduces risk for responders and the public.
  • Operational Efficiency: Accurate data improves confidence in declaring safety levels.
  • Comprehensive Support: 24/7 on-site and remote assistance, plus yearly refresher training with local partner IPSA (Instrumentation & Petroleum Services Asia Sdn Bhd).
  • Industry Leadership: BOMBA shares operational success stories on social media, reinforcing their expertise.
